In Sarah Ruhl's MELANCHOLY PLAY, a young woman named Tilly turns a contemporary Illinois, USA into a snapshot of a tightly knit, intuitive world. In this plane we can see a small group of acquaintances, seize their emotions and stop apologizing for their "necessary bodily humors." MELANCHOLY PLAY challenges the misapplication of the social contract that is enforcing distance rather than justifying our connectedness. It asks "Why do we have no place for moderation, an inbetween?" Melancholy is the best word English speakers have to describe an array of emotions that are integral to the human connection.
